From Personal Struggles to Global Impact:
THE JOURNEY OF VAL YOUNG AND UNITE TO LIVE WITH AUTISM
Val Young, the founder and president of Unite to Live with Autism (U2LWA), never imagined her personal struggles would one day be the cornerstone for a global non-profit organization that provides a safe haven for families living with Autism. Today, U2LWA is gearing up to host its inaugural Prom event, an initiative aimed at creating unforgettable experiences for teens and young adults living with Autism.
The journey began more than two decades ago when Young met a girl who exhibited similar behaviors to her son. This encounter led her to seek medical advice, which confirmed her son’s Autism diagnosis. The experience was a turning point that brought a newfound purpose to her life, propelling her to bridge the gap in society’s understanding and acceptance of Autism.
Inspired by her family’s shared experiences and their collective will to help others, Young initiated small acts of kindness within their community. These actions brought them face to face with homeless families, who, like them, were dealing with similar family dynamics. The stark contrast between her strong support system and the reality faced by others ignited a fire within her to extend her hand to those in need.
Young channeled her experiences into her book, written in 2004 and finally published in 2021, as a testament to her journey. The years 2020-2021 marked a significant transition in her life as she distanced herself from toxic influences, paving the way for the establishment of U2LWA as a non-profit organization in 2022.
The idea to host a Prom for individuals living with Autism was inspired by her son’s high school experience. She realized the lack of safe and inclusive spaces where children with Autism and their families could participate and enjoy communal activities. By launching the inaugural Prom, she aims to create a space where every attendee can feel like a king or queen, with a red carpet entrance, paparazzi, and crowns.
Her journey was not without its challenges. She admits that her biggest obstacle was overcoming personal procrastination. But her association with the Redlands Chamber of Commerce played a pivotal role in motivating her and steering U2LWA toward its current success.
Young is committed to keeping all U2LWA events free of charge, believing that no family living with Autism should bear additional financial burdens to access supportive services. Her vision goes beyond just events, as she aspires to build a global support network for families.
With a holistic approach to Autism, favoring natural remedies over medication, Young is confident that U2LWA’s impact will extend worldwide. The goal is to have offices around the globe, as well as virtual platforms for families to connect, share experiences, and find solace in knowing they are not alone.
